Starman celebrated as an inspiration
The only thing missing from the celebration of life for Phil Hellsten on Wednesday afternoon at Peace Lutheran Church in Danville was the Starman himself, although a death mask made by his friend Bill Carmel looked out over the crowd. He was eulogized by the Rev. Steve Harms, who quoted from the Christian and the Tibetan Bibles to conjure up a portrait of the artist as a different but creative and giving man, who enlivened the streets of Danville for many decades as he walked about his business. Firefighters face the heat
Firefighters experienced hands-on, live wildland fire training during the past two days at Camp Parks in Dublin, extinguishing 500 different fires. When the fire season gets under way, people can help out by calling in a fire as soon as they see or smell smoke, said Battalion Chief Dave George of the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District, who was involved in the training. School board discusses plan for Measure C oversight
