'Candy Bomber' comes to town
|
Col. Gail Halvorsen, also known as the Berlin Candy Bomber, is headed to Danville on Sunday, July 18 for a presentation on how he inspired hope in the children of Berlin by dropping candy from a plane.
During the Russian blockade of West Berlin following WWII, American and British pilots delivered more than 2 million tons of food and fuel to a starving city in what became known as the Berlin Airlift or "Operation Vittles." Halvorsen took it one step further and dropped candy -- more than 21 tons during the airlift -- in "Operation Little Vittles."
Halvorsen later recalled one young Berliner saying, "it was just chocolate, it was hope. And without hope, the soul dies."
This free presentation is open to the public and will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 655 Old Orchard Road in Danville. Any residents of Berlin during the airlift planning to attend can email Chris Saunders at cabanachris@gmail.com to make arrangements to meet Halvorsen. — Emily West Are you receiving Express, our free daily e-mail edition? Posted by mx, a resident of the Danville neighborhood, on Jul 16, 2010 at 9:55 am Love to attend this event, but the fact that it's tied to a church, even more so a Mormon Church makes it seem like it's going to turn into a recruiting event...so me and the kids won't be coming. I'll bet a whole lot more feel like I do...
