Construction ready to begin on YMCA facility

Work is set to get under way on the preliminary infrastructure needed for the new YMCA facility on the Alamo/Danville border. Mt. Diablo Region YMCA CEO Michael Erwin said the work signals the beginning of the end of a multi-year $8.1 million capital campaign to put new facilities in Alamo and Oakley and renovate the existing facility in Pleasant Hill.

A few months ago - April 18 to be exact - we ran a story on Roy Bloss, a man who has been an Alamo activist in the five decades he made it his home. He was proudest of his work to keep Danville Boulevard two lanes when the county wanted to make it four - whew! thank heaven for Roy and the others who fought this ill-conceived idea.

Tree Atack

On Labor Day, at around 2:00 PM, I was having my daily coffee on the bench outside Starbucks on Hearts, at cross section of Prospects. It was a beautiful day, a bit windy. Suddenly, I heard a cracking noise and shouted at the people on the next bench to watch out. Before I could move a big branch came down and scratches me on my face and legs. At first, I moved the big branch to the side to clear the sidewalk. I called the Danville police, since I noticed another bigger branch is broken and will come down any minute. Danville police came and looked at the tree and called the town people to come and take care of the tree. Meanwhile, people kept passing under the tree and kept wanting to sit on the the benches. I didn�t trust the bigger branch, because it was just resting on the other tree in front and could come down at any moment. Then, I pulled the first branch and placed it on the walkway, blocking the path for people not to walk under the tree and warned the people that attempted to use the bench. I didn�t know how long it was going to take for town people to show up, and did not want to sit there warning people all day. Then, I told a lady whom I had warned earlier, and was sitting with her young daughter close by watching the event, that I was going to untangle the branch from the other tree, so that it would fall intentionally rather than accidentally, falling on someone causing damage. I kind of guessed which direction the branch was going to fall. I stayed clear the path and pulled the breanch off its resting place and it came down tumbling. Later on, the town people came and cut and removed the fallen branches, and indicated they were going to further investigate the stability of the rest of the tree. Fortunately, everything ended up peacefully, with only a few scratches on my leg. Thanks to the lady with the child who gave me encouragement not to leave and to make sure the situation is safe and secure.

Written communications received prior to September 9 will be mailed to the Commissioners with the LAFCO agenda packet, will be posted on the LAFCO website, and may be addressed in the LAFCO staff report. Written communications received after agenda distribution will be copied and made available to the Commissioners and the public at the LAFCO hearing on September 18.

Public Comment at the LAFCO Hearing

Protocol - Speakers wishing to speak at the LAFCO hearing must complete a Speaker�s Card at the hearing. Speaker's Cards and a Speaker's Card box/depository will be available at the LAFCO hearing. When called, speaker should approach the podium, state name and address for the record, and speak clearly into the microphone. LAFCO meetings are recorded.

Public comments are limited to three minutes. This is to allow everyone who wishes to speak an opportunity.

Some Suggestions - In any effort to allow adequate time for public comment and Commissioner deliberation, LAFCO encourages speakers to avoid repeating comments that were previously stated. Also, if with a group, such as a homeowners or other association, LAFCO encourages groups to appoint a representative to speak on behalf of the group. Again, LAFCO wants to assure that everyone who wishes to speak has a turn.

LAFCO requests that written communications be provided in advance of the LAFCO hearing to allow LAFCO staff time to make copies for the Commissioners and the public. However, if written communications are presented at the LAFCO hearing, a copy should be given to the LAFCO Clerk for the record. Also, LAFCO encourages those who wish to read their written letters to summarize.

LAFCO hopes this information is useful.

Evading an officer ends in multiple charges

Danville police chased a drunken driver, an 18-year-old Danville man, up San Ramon Valley Boulevard at 11:15 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8. The driver had a 16-year-old girl from San Ramon in the car with him and was arrested on felony charges of evading a police officer and child endangerment.

Goodbye to the old San Ramon Valley High gym

See the video! Demolition of the old gymnasium at San Ramon Valley High School continued through this morning with a crane working like a jackhammer, poking away at the concrete and steel structure while an excavator cleared away the debris, which was sorted for recycling.

In morning e-exchanges, neighbors throughout our Diablo Vista region were considering who would be candidates for Alamo Town Council in any incorporation election. Many names among the current more public proponents for incorporation were eliminated, but few names could be suggested as potential candidates that would be trusted with the first four years of creating and defining our government.

It was an exceptional discussion that should be considered by your broader readership. Within the AIM boundaries, it would appear, the choice of candidates will determine the outcome of an incorporation election.

Drought may be drawing mountain lions

Police searched the area where a mountain lion was sited last week but didn't see any tracks, dead game or other evidence of a cougar. They are calling it an unconfirmed sighting but took care to notify neighbors door to door.
