Athletes plus academics
The Monte Vista Boys Varsity 3A East Bay Baseball team has attained the highest goal of education athletics, combining outstanding academic performance with interscholastic athletic participation. With a grade-point average of 3.19, Monte Vista High School's student athletes earned the North Coast Section Boys Scholastic Baseball 3A East Bay Championship Team Award for spring 2006. The boys Tri-Valley track team also attained the goal, with a grade-point average of 3.16, winning the NCS Boys Scholastic Track Tri-Valley Championship Team Award.
These awards are presented to the top three NCS varsity teams in each division or classification in each sport with the highest composite GPA of 3.0 or above. There are 171 schools in the North Coast Section.
Cubbies Soccer
A six-week program to introduce children ages 3-5 to the game of soccer in being given by the Town of Danville and begins July 10 at Osage Station Park. It's parent participation, and the moms and dads will instruct the kids on the basics of dribbling, passing, trapping and shooting. The town will send each parent a practice outline and field map for the six weeks; it will include basic drills and game ideas. Town staff will be at the first practice to answer questions, mark fields and hand out equipment.
The cost of $55 for residents ($66 for non-residents) includes a T-shirt and an award for each participant, plus soccer balls and cones for each team during its practice. All parents are expected to actively participate at each practice. A parents meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. June 22 at the Los Cerros Middle School gym, 986 Blemer Road. Looking for golfers
The Rotary Club of Danville is seeking golfers for Thursday, June 22, for its Greater Danville Open Invitational Golf Tournament. The club hopes to raise $35,000 to donate to Discovery Counseling Center, the San Ramon Valley YMCA, Hospice and Crisis Centers serving children and parents in the area. In addition, proceeds fund college scholarships and leadership programs for local teens. Space is still available to play in the Tournament, which starts at 11:30 a.m. at Poppy Ridge in Livermore.
Entry fees cover the cost of a box lunch and dinner at the clubhouse for this championship-level course. Sponsorships range from $100 to $10,000. To sign up, call Tony Leonard at 837-3716 or Jeff Behring at 648-3829.
Golden Skate Roller Hockey League
Roller Hockey teams are forming now for the Golden Skate Roller Hockey League, which plays at the rink at 2701 Hooper Drive in San Ramon. New players are welcome. The leagues are as follows: Mites (ages 6-9), Squirts (10-13) and Juniors (14-19). The season starts June 19, and the deadline for signups is June 13. Adult softball
The Danville Senior Softball League plays pickup games at 9:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays year-round. New members are welcome. Call Bob Randall at 855-4646 for more information.
San Ramon Valley Tennis Club
The San Ramon Valley Tennis Club is looking for new members. It offers league play for women throughout the year for both A and B players. Games are played on weekdays and during the day, in the East Bay. Membership fee is $30 per year. For information, call Laurie at 820-0695.
